Bowdoin writes to Bass, 23 Sept. 1831, from Hartford, introducing Mr. [Henry William] Ravenel of Charleston, S.C. and asking that his name be added to the books so that he can use the facilities of the Atheneum.

James Bowdoin, nephew of the famous statesman of the same name, was educated at Bowdoin College. Born James Bowdoin Winthrop, he dropped Winthrop after he inherited part of his uncle's estate.
